The Road To INVICTUS

With the release of our debut EP earlier this spring, we thought it would be cool to give you all a glimpse into all the serious work that went into making INVICTUS a reality.

My last semester at MTSU, a year & a half ago, I (Scott) was building my career in the music business - though I wasn’t actively pursuing my dream of being a rockstar, I was content with where I was.

Later that semester, I won Match Record’s songwriting competition. The prize was to get a free studio recording at MTSU’s Studio A. With my free recording session I chose to record an acoustic version of Feel It In My Bones. It was awesome.

I met up with the producers a week before to have them listen to the song and make some tweeks. We worked on the melody on Verse 2, switched a few words and cut the bridge in half. Feel It In My Bones is one of my babies, and watching it be refined was really hard - however, I was prepared and told myself it was for the best for the song. We knocked out the recording in one day. I did vocals, acoustic guitar and the producers added drums and keys.

The song was featured at MTSU’s Listening Night, which was the academic equivalent to receiving an award at The Grammys! Ever since I was a prospective MTSU student, it was my dream to record in Studio A and to get my music featured at Listening Night, and it happened in one week!

"The first day in the studio, Adam, Andrew and I duked it out in the studio and experimented with the arrangement, where Andrew Hall presented alot of ideas for the song that added to the dynamics." - Scott, vox + guitar

Two Audio Production Grad students, Aaron Trimble and Gibran Sponchiado, attended the Listening Night and loved Feel it In My Bones. We did not know each other at the time, but they did some digging until they got in contact with me.

"Today, I recorded bass with Gibran and Aaron for the song ‘Steakhouse’. His home studio was epic. He had a massive recording set up to professionally produce high quality sound. He’s a fantastic producer with a really good ear on what works and what doesn’t fit." - Logan Rhea, bass

Aaron Trimble approached me asking to record a song for their graduate class. I presented him with Oh Darling, Steakhouse and Church Of The Unloved. We chose to record Steakhouse. I was stoked!

Adam Hudson tracked the epic guitars parts and Andrew Hall pounded on the drums. We recorded several different bassist until we found the perfect bass line.

It was awesome working with Aaron and Gibran. Gibran is a great engineer and Aaron and I really clicked. He understood my vision for the song was willing to try my ideas and go with them.

After we had finished recording Steakhouse I got fired from my full-time job at SuperChief in March 2015. That same day Andrew called me up (not knowing that I was fired) saying let’s pursue this band for real. We spent some time in thought & prayer & collectively agreed (along with Logan Rhea) that music was the passion God had put into our hearts & that we needed to fight for it to the best of our ability. Thus, LeAnder was born.

For our first project it was important that we work with people just like us; people with real skill who are just getting their start in the industry. We wanted to help kickstart our friends careers while pursuing our band.

We used Arron & Gibran for the rest of the EP recording, we had media friends shoot & edit our first music video, we had PR & Marketing-major friends assist with the promotion of the EP & House-Show tour. Our intention was to make INVICTUS a 100% local, young professionals driven project - & we are proud to say it was.

The next session we did group vocals, and we had Isaiah Haas, Andrew Thomas, Jacob Horenburg and Nat Durant lend their vocals. The environment was great, we were having a good time joking around and making music that we loved and believed it. We weren’t taking ourselves too seriously. It’s how I think Heaven will be like. A party. Recording Steakhouse was a party. I loved every minute of it.

There’s nothing like recording songs you believe in with and making music with some of your closest friends.  It was amazing to watch as these songs slowly came together. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

"Scott sat in front of us directing like a church choir with constant jokes, laughing, and smiling. We looked like a bunch retro kids at silent disco party on with giant trashcan headphones on. It was a fun day." - Logan Rhea, bass

"This was the dream. This was the rock song that I believe embodies LeAnder’s music both musically and lyrically. This song is what we are about. This song was super fun and probably the quickest out of the three." - Scott Lamons, vox + guitar
